Do you know what that tweet means?? It means Lust for Life is coming in TWO WEEKS. I can barely contain myself. I might cry. Or faint. Or both.
I’m gonna get super real with y’all for a minute. I had a nightmare that I met Lana, and I couldn’t say anything to her because I couldn’t stop crying. After a while, she just sort of awkwardly walked away from me. I woke up genuinely upset. And I thought about it– that would really happen to me in real life. That’s what was so scary about it.
I recognize that it takes a certain kind of person to like Lana Del Rey, or Lana Del Bae as I like to call her. Have you ever seen that video of old people listening to her music? They love her! She’s for old people and young people who are secretly old people, like me.
She’s for people who wish they were of a different time, people who wish to indulge their angsty side, and people who need an excuse to let out their wild side. She’s for cruisin’ down the coast goin’ ’bout 99. And, y’know, she’s for people who like true, raw talent.
Lust For Life is Lana’s fifth album, preceded by Lana Del Rey in 2010, Born To Die in 2012, Ultraviolence in 2014, and Honeymoon last year. She’s breaking her bi-annual streak, and we are not worthy. She has released three singles already– Cherry, Coachella- Woodstock in my Mind, and Love.
In honor of the upcoming Lust For Life release, I’ve compiled a list of my top ten favorite Lana songs, along with videos from Youtube that you can listen to as you read! I invite you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the high.
This one’s about how Lana is so devoted to some guy that he’s like her religion. It comes across a little cheesy when it’s written out, but it’s so calming to listen to. It’s sweet and soft and genuine.
Honeymoon is a sweet ballad about a woman who loves a seemingly unlovable man, but they’re happy together. It appeals to anyone who loves their bad boys.
I posted the ten minute version of this video because that’s more time I get to look at Lana with this gorgeous curly hair that makes me think I might have a little thing for girls. Not all of them, just her. (Although I also said I had a girl crush on Leighton Meester in my TV Show post…hmmm) This song is all about freedom, and it’s a great song to drive on the highway to. I hope Lust For Life has another short-film music video to go along with it!
7. Off to the Races
Off to the Races is one of Lana’s darkest songs if you ask me. Between the pounding of those drums in the background to the lyrics about being sent off to Riker’s Island, it’s not your average love song. It makes me feel bold and daring even when all I’m doing is driving to class and not stopping my jam sesh at red lights.
6. Terrence Loves You
The thing that I love about Lana is that her music is so indulgent. She, and particularly this song, are like the best friend who brings over the wine and ice cream the night of a breakup. When she talks about how she still gets trashed when she hears his tunes, I feel like that’s something everyone can relate to. Almost everyone has wanted to indulge in that unhealthy way of coping with losing someone. Almost everyone has hoped that drinking would help them forget the bad things they’ve been through, if only for a little while. Terrence Loves You is about figuring out how to be strong even when you’ve just lost someone you love, and it’s both my favorite, and Lana’s favorite song on Honeymoon.
5. Burning Desire
This is the most intensely sexual song I’ve ever heard. I dare anything on Lust For Life to try and compete. Seriously, get it on your sex playlist ASAP. (Oh, is that just a me-thing…?) When Lana croons about touching herself to pretend her man is there, I kind of want to do the same to pretend she’s there. Too far?
4. Video Games
There’s a fair amount of controversy online about the meaning of Video Games, but the consensus seems to be this: it’s about two different men, and how she wishes her current relationship was like her last one. You can tell because she talks directly to one of the men using the pronouns you and your (I say you da bestest, lean in for a big kiss) but she talks about another guy using the pronoun his (put his favorite perfume on). However, many other people think it’s about being emotionally abused, and others still think it’s just a nice song about being in love. One of the things I love about Lana is her lyrical prowess. She’s got a gift for letting songs have different meanings for everyone.
3. High by the Beach
High By The Beach is about knowing that your man doesn’t really get you on an emotional level. The coolest part to me though, is the brutal honesty. She says: “the truth is I never bought into your bullshit when you would pay tribute to me ’cause I know that all I want to do is get high by the beach,” and I think that’s hilarious and awesome.
2. National Anthem
I don’t know if this comment was pre- or post-Tropico, but Lana has said that the National Anthem video is her biggest accomplishment. It’s like a short film, really. It’s a dark, alternative version of the Kennedy story, and A$AP Rocky plays the president of the United States, so that’s pretty cool. I honestly ship him and Lana in real life. Also, I’ve memorized her monologue at the end, so let that be a testament to my obsession, not that I need another one.
1. On Our Way
This song is unreleased, but still very easy to find on the internet. And it is my favorite song of all time, not just my favorite of Lana’s music. It’s soft and gentle, and indulgent like the others. It’s about freedom, kind of like Ride, but less urgent. This song is like a breath of fresh air, the kind that breaks the “play again” button, the kind you make people shut up for so you can hear every cadence and chord. I love it, and I hope you do, too.
